On International Investing

Paul Bouchey, Chief Investment Officer at Parametric, discusses common misconceptions associated with investing in international equity portfolios and provides insights into Parametric’s Systematic Alpha philosophy.

Q: DON’T YOU NEED A LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND COMPANY-SPECIFIC ANALYSIS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN INTERNATIONAL INVESTING?

Bouchey: In the international markets, the belief that managers must travel to exotic locales, visiting factories with a hard hat on, and finding opportunities that other analysts have overlooked is a myth. For certain private equity deals, startup ventures, infrastructure projects, or private real estate investments it can make sense to have focused local knowledge and to “see it for yourself.” But, for investing in publicly traded stocks that publish their financials regularly, boots on the ground are both costly and unnecessary.
